UNIT F
Unit F takes an eclectic plunge into the post-pandemic zeitgeist, this year exploring ‘seriously silly’ decarbonisation strategies by designing of, for, and as, plants. We invent plant-based materials for party purposes; we take a dip in the hummus of public toilet design, and we test ‘time density’ as a sustainability tool through the 24hr site. This year we ask: what can architects learn from plants?

Ben Naish - The Swan Wharf Market is an intervention to help deliver the agricultural sector a platform to both sell their produce and to celebrate their rich agrarian heritage. Above the market, a restaurant that will utilise this stream of fresh produce to create a dining experience located in a stunning canal setting. The building will be passively heated via deeply rooted maize to help raise awareness of the current energy crisis that faces the ‘Cucumber Capital’ and serve as an example of how to overcome it.

Emily Burke - Teetotallers are often overlooked by the night-time industries who assume people go out to get drunk and rowdy. However, with decreasing numbers of young drinkers (National Statistics, 2018), an alcohol-free bar and social space may become desired. At night, the venue sells plant-based, alcohol- free beverages and provides a place to socialise. By day, classes are run on how to make your own plant-based drinks and how to grow and care for the plants that make them. The plant I’m incorporating, the Mimosa Pudica, is renowned for its medical uses. There will be a holistic pharmacy onsite and a greenhouse where the plants are grown and sold.

Maxwell Bowker - Bananas & Barrels - In the UK alone, we waste over 1.4 million bananas per day... That's over 500 million peels per year! My project ‘Banana’s & Barrels’ aims to reduce some of this waste by creating a rum distillery in Hackney Wick for the UK based carbon negative rum distillery called ‘Two Drifters’, and is aimed at processing these waste banana peels along with steam bending spirit washed barrels back into useful shapes. The project features a facade made from these repurposed barrels, along with a heavy focus on timber.

Brieuc Desgrées du Loû - Terrart – Studios for Artists - The project consists of studios and accommodation for artists, with an added focus on plant cultivation. The building, which cascades down to the river on which it sits, is inspired by terraced fields. Large tubes, reminiscent of stems, evoke the rice plant that grows in flooded fields. It is open 24/7, and on some occasions temporary exhibitions and educational workshops can be organised to draw people in and create conversation. Finally, it uses mainly wood and bio-based materials to reduce its carbon footprint and impact on the biodiversity.
