The unit this year will be set up as a zone rather than a design studio – if you are interested in safety rather than danger – for prescription and for doctrine, this is not the studio for you.
The Zone is about Architecture in General
Marshall McLuhan told us that every new technology does not replace the previous one, it turns first to junk and then into art... Why am I mentioning this? The thing about a zone is that it is not a unit, it is an area of influence If the dominant technology is changing so is society, so will archi- tecture, (see Gideon' Mechanisation Takes Command). Surely in a university, a part of your job is to speculate on the possible consequences on the architecture of new technology? Beyond the fact that programmes are being erased what is architecture now for you? And a really simple but difficult question, what materials do you think architecture now should be made if? Mies knew Corb knew... You? Good luck, it's a pain in the neck studying architecture isn't it because nobody can agree on a body of knowledge that you need to know or agree on what exactly architecture is, but we might say it is a continual discourse? So you may as well enjoy the journey, acquire new skills and see if your projects can be as elegant and beautiful as your films until such time as you find yourself in another reality, the work place! However, you might remember that reality is something we all make together if we don't like it maybe we should work together to change it?

Experimental Zone 2020
Studio structure has remained the same for decades: Zone 5 challenges the premises of the design studio and seeks to provide an alternative – the experimental zone.
The zone will ask you to explore a series of starting premises and agendas, and to use these premises to become autonomous and collaborative. Researching what interests you as a response to these agendas will help you explore your position on architecture and to generate form and programme finding methods.
The Zone is interested in: VR/AR Generation Z/M, low culture, deployable architecture, event-space, fabrication as process/exploration, hyper-tech materials and technology exploration, new building types, new architectural agendas, the connected city. Video as sketch
The Gateway Ark
Bilal Ahmad
The Gateway Ark is a project that focusses on transitions and dualities. On the surface it is a launchpad to leave the planet should we destroy it to the point where it becomes inhabitable; at its core it is a connection between Earth and the Heavens set in Iceland and influenced by Norse mythology.

The Oasis: A Virtual Club Church
Elliott Afoke
The project derived beyong hagiography, it would be a virtual church to the universe but to the new millenial, it is about re-examining the way a church is typically experienced. The use of virtual reality to problematize the new millenial’s religious fanatacism, technological addiction and social reclusion.

Neo-Lampedusa
Freeda Jane Madius
Neo-Lampedusa is a polemic architecture located on the White Cliffs of Dover, aimed at changing the perception of people towards refugees. Film is used as the methodology to experiment with the effects on the human psyche as the hypothesis is that a good film is able to change a viewer’s way of thought, thus affecting their behaviour and how they use the physical space. By using paper architecture, Neo-Lampedusa attempts to reconstruct the architecture of the human mind to envision what equality, freedom, and justice could be like for refugees.

Cloud-Scrapers
Jasmine Sim LI Gin
This project is about disrupting the feeling of detachment between students and the working professionals by creating architecture that encourages casual and accidental interactions between the two groups. As Peter Cook’s CRAB studio mentioned, “it is the responsibility of architecture to identify and, by this identification, to stimulate. Thus, this project pushes its major spaces to cultivate an environment that is free of hierarchy and social ideologies, allowing the two groups to coexist and to learn from each other. This counters the ideas of David Greene’s Invisible Architecture which believes in the disappearance of architecture.

oXXXford
Kyle Mccracken
Influenced by Oxford University’s secret societies, liberating BDSM experiences in Berlin’s Brutalist Techno clubs and LGBT+ campaigns for acceptance & freedom of expression, ‘oXXXford’ was my attempt to subvert the dominant historic architecture & conservative ideologies of Oxford with a monolithic fetish-focused nightclub & design research centre unapologetically crashing through some of the city’s most iconic buildings, including the Bodleian Library & Radcliffe Camera.
Within a 40m tall concrete shell engraved with a pastiche arrangement of Oxford-specific architectural details, a collection of fetish rooms are seemingly suspended amongst a steel frame and connected by open-air walkways. Scattered throughout the newly formed ruins of entombed historic structures are dancefloors, exhibition spaces, cascading rivers and lush garden courtyards. Red is used as a motif throughout to symbolise sexual lust and a challenging of authority, whilst black is intended to reflect the communities in the shadow of mainstream society & their oppression; a dominant vs submissive interchange.

People Pod
Tristan Yu Tze Xien
Positioned to the north of Lambeth and rising over 50 meters in height, the striking People Pod is the centrepiece of Waterloo – a new residential neighbourhood being envisioned above waterloo train station. Rising from a challenging site to deliver a unique profile, and range of living pods types within a diverse and vibrant new neighbourhood – this is the story of London’s first onsite automated construction of the new residential towers.
Besides, demonstrate the unlimited potential of taking recycled plastic material properties and successfully transforming it to the highest form of product engineering. The great enabler for this goal is the ability to demonstrate the feasibility of environmentally serving technologies which competes and often out-competes more traditional and far less sustainable technologies. We are not just about being green. We are about being efficient, practical, and able to create affordable houses for Londoners which we can all truly call ‘Our Home’.

In-Between Thessaloniki
Yee Lyn Tan
Social media is a cultural paradigm shift. If Greece – Thessaloniki populist democracy leads to an economic and value crisis, I would like to seek a solution to connect people and provide new opportunities through social media and architecture.
By turning empty shop lots into 5G spots that connect people digitally, with social media apps as a place-making tool, everyone in Thessaloniki is able to post about any content onto the screens.
This is where you could explore the other's interest and to initiate conversation. It also highly encourages small/new entrepreneurship by able to create an online shop “on the screen”. With official news and memes on the screens,
In-Between Thessaloniki also provided a political discussion zone with physical market for creative creators/food vendors.

Is The Party Over Yet? : Reinventing Ibiza Tourism in a Flooded World
Yee Wen Siow
The narrative is based in a future scenario where Ibiza has faced the reality of climate change, economy collapse and social segregation. In 2050, locals and tourists are bound to live together tackling with limited resources in this flooded world due to the rising of sea water level. This not-too-distant flooded reality made sure tourists & locals of all social levels get along as the locals realise that tourism is still one of the biggest sources of economy. The hope is to cultivate a balance between locals’ daily living with tourism, at the same time reinventing Ibiza’s tourism, reimagining the purpose of retired aircraft and recycled fuselages. A brand-new way of living is expected in this flooded world.
The party is not over after all.

The Hong Kong Protest In Perspectives
Chong Yu Xuan
In 2019, Hong Kong erupted into a series of protest leading to months of unrest following an extradition bill by China. The usual busy but peaceful streets of Hong Kong transformed into a stage of opposing narratives. The Local citizens fighting for democracy against communist China or is it The Peoples Party working to cease the riots and unrest of Hong Kong. Infrastructure of Media popped up one after another to enhance their storytelling. Bias and ideologies of different stories of different sides embedded into the streets of Hong Kong, forever carved into the city’s memories.

Inflatahouse
Viona Raifi
Inflatahouse is a modular inflatable structure, built in voids around the city. It's structural integrity arises from high pressure inflation, drop stitch technology, and the host buildings external walls. Inflatahouse is a solution for high density areas in cities, built for those who can not afford to live in these areas.
