DSR is a student-centric studio designed to support students in building confidence in their individual creative process and approach to the development of architectural concepts and briefs in response to a given theme.
The studio begins by asking students to reflect on who they are as a designer, how they work, and what they want to achieve across year. There is no fixed studio style, tool, method, or agenda.
The theme for DSR4 asked students to explore how new architecture can respond to the complex layering of time, culture, and creative practice in the context of the 2000 year-old World Heritage city of Bath.

Rosie Somerville - Water Rituals: The Turncock’s Temple in The City Laundry Re-Imagined - The Temple Laundry, proposes a communal, clothes washing facility for the inhabitants of the city of Bath. Set in 2050, where severe water scarcity, due to climate change, is a reality; social structures are upturned and the mundane water ritual of washing laundry takes on a sacred disposition. The project critiques the current use of Bath’s unique asset, its hot spring water, which is primarily used as a tourist attraction - a visual aid for historic water rituals; instead of being used for the inhabitants of the city as historic instructions around the city implore.

Amir Azrin - The Social Hub for Walkers - learning the city through walking - Bath’s Social Hub for Walkers is a public hub designed specifically for walkers as an anchor point of walking activities and to prepare walkers with the essentials before embarking on their walking explorations. The project site is at Boat Dock, located east of Bath city centre. This project looks into reconnecting people with the Georgian promenading culture in Bath, designed to allow people to read and learn about the history of Bath through walking by linking them to a series of walking routes in and around the city.

Nick Franklin - The Walcot Building Workshop - The Walcot Building Workshop is a building company, architectural design service and research organisation that through engaging with the local industrial heritage and history of counter-cultural movements, aims to bring artisan production back to Walcot Street in Bath. By encouraging collaboration between traditional craftsmen and architects and working to find new ways of working with the key materials of the city, the proposal will act as a crafts guild, educating the public and promoting the production of more well-crafted modern architecture in Bath and further afield.

Dina Rey - Reimagine, Regenerate, and Reconnect: A Sustainable Farming and Energy Project for Community Food Security - The core of my project proposal is repurposing a neglected industrial warehouse and its surrounding car park into a regenerative farm, showcasing sustainable and locally sourced food production. This farm will prioritize eco-friendly practices, focusing on soil health, crop diversity, and water conservation. The goal is to provide nutritious food for the local community while restoring the ecological balance. Through adaptive reuse, the disused warehouse will become a thriving hub for agricultural innovation, incorporating renewable energy sources like glass solar panels, Building Integrated PV facades, and heat pumps to reduce reliance on traditional energy. This approach minimizes our carbon footprint and encourages the adoption of clean energy alternatives. Additionally, the project will feature CLT volumes carefully integrated to create lively public recreational areas. This design promotes community engagement, fostering relaxation, social interaction, and leisure activities while bringing people together.

Alex Malden - Green Park Station Arts Warehouse - Regeneration of Neglected and Missed Potential of Industrial Heritage in the City of Bath My project is based around regenerating the existing building in the city of Bath being Green Park Station, to be used as the final destination of an art sculpture trail, enriching the experience and circulation of the existing functions of the site. Such as a farmer's market, bike shop and local traders. This project intends to create a space for all to enjoy, increasing the availability of art throughout the city of Bath, whilst also allowing people to notice the beauty of ordinary things.

Vinisha Thakkar - The Bath Assembly: A Public Forum that acts as a medium for expression - Bath is known for its rich history and culture, and the performing arts form a significant part of that heritage. The project aims at developing the site, [Bog Island + the Undercroft + Parade Garden], as an active public square, using Bath’s performing arts culture as a catalyst. The project will serve as the backdrop for the assembly of Bathonians and tourists for festivals, events, indoor and outdoor performances, seasonal markets and more. The design gradually blends outside with the inside of the proposal to remove the notion of “being allowed in”, which has been prevalent in Bath for centuries.

Claudia Elena Vesga - The Price of Luxury: A Satirical Critique of Bathonian Society- The preservation and celebration of Georgian Bath is paralleled by soap. Rich with symbolism for urban cleansing, soap has historically been a luxury item although traditionally made with slaughtered animal fat. Funded by the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, Bath is the living record of the Age of Elegance. For both soap and Bath, few are aware of the ethical price of the luxurious final product. Applying satire to present-day Bath: a soap factory embodies the societal issues of the city, emphasising the price of luxury, shining a light on Bath’s dark history, and creating a pungent cloud over the conservation area.

Nóra Herbert - New Spring Gardens - New Spring Gardens is a river corridor regeneration project in Bath. The design aims to respond to all the historic cultural layers, and the problems of the site. It will reconnect the city to the river, bring back the lost cultural activity by the riverside and filter the polluted water. The existing clubhouse on the site will be reused as a prominent element of the masterplan where people can engage with water, go to cultural events, and enjoy the pleasant atmosphere of the wetland park.

Zsuzsi Schram - Bath Gate - Sense-ible Spaces for All - Bath Gate is a new proposed entry point into Bath when accessed by train, that corrects the current issues of way-finding into the city, whilst retrofitting an abandoned department store. This sensory sanctuary is to cater for all with different sensory&emotional needs, regardless of where within the spectrum they are, and allow people to recharge, relax or even heal in one of the specifically designed, low- or high sensory environments. Whilst raising awareness to the non-neurotypical sensory needs of the public, it acts as a benchmark project for policy making in enforcing minimal sensory requirements in our built environments.

Grace Hiu Yan Tang - Walcot Gateway-The Makers Hub - The project, WALCOT GATEWAY is a MAKERS HUB for makers and visitors to experience and exchange culture in Walcot, the ARTISAN QUARTER of the central Bath. By capturing the authentic identity of being a MARKET and its historical value to the neighborhood, and the future development trend, this intervention is the culture cradle for the art community. There are MARKET STREETS, FLEXIBLE STUDIO UNITS, INDEPENDENT SHOPS, AFFORDABLE HOUSING UNITS, and exhibition space, forming a SUSTAINABLE LOOP for the art community to base and growth in Walcot.

Marcu Dinca - Biophilic Escapism; A Trauma Informed Design project - This architectural project embraces the Trauma Design Guidelines principles to create a healing space for individuals recovering from traumatic experiences. The aim is to foster a sense of safety, empowerment, and tranquillity within the built environment, supporting the holistic healing process. This project will work in conjunction with Trauma Recovery Centre in Bath and will provide a post-treatment safe space for people to transition into their lives by entering a safe transitional space. The design will double down as a sensory retreat, where people overwhelmed by the urban environment of Bath could escape without leaving the city.
