UNIT A
Makeshift means “ to do what one wants to do, in spite of not having ideal conditions”. We feel sums up what we are all experiencing at this time and we also like the combination of “make”, to create, and “shift”, to change or move. Makeshift suggests: working with the existing, making-do and mending, embracing the ad-hock and bricolage, designing through doing, reusing, repurposing and learning to love the rough, direct and unfinished.
By temporarily taking away many of the things that people love about cities (socialising, culture, working with others) and overnight moving many people to work from home the pandemic has revived and intensified a discussion about what our cities are for and how they are organised. The changes are on a scale never seen before, but many of the issues have been growing for some time. Clone high streets, the hollowing out of town centres, towns being overrun by cars and out-of-town shopping. This year Unit A has waded into this discussion by designing buildings that bring people together.
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Project 01: Working Holiday
In this project we are going to investigate how a building can be relevant to a particular place. The aim of this project is to design a piece of architecture that makes a clear statement about the relationship between climate, material and landscape today.

Project 02 :The Power Garden
This project deals with an existing building that was once a mighty power station. It is given a new life coming out of a pandemic, it provides a dual use space for people who work from home, and a winter garden where nature is only a hands stretch away.
