DS1
DS1 focused on developing regenerative proposals to augment the existing structure's function, character, and performance. Each student was assigned a pre-selected building in Oxford and asked to familiarise themselves with its design, context, history, performance and narrative. As part of the research, they produced a detailed set of drawings and 3D models to analyse the existing structure. Furthermore, they carried out an energy audit to identify the impact of their existing buildings on the environment.
Throughout semester 1, students tested a number of different concepts using weekly “augmentations”. Each week, they focused on a specific design approach such as addition, subtraction, or replication to explore the opportunities and assess the implications of the chosen method. In Semester 2, students expanded these ideas and developed their project into a final proposal.
Anuar Zahin Bin Jasni
Conservation Machine: An Architecture in response to conservation, maintenance, and education
Rather than altering the building fabric, Odeng’s interest is in the conservation of the existing building. By incorporating a transformable “conservation machine” within the building he maintains the existing function of the chapel whilst adding a platform for the community to collaborate and learn about conservation and preservation.
Chia Hui Lee
What’s hidden behind the walls?
Chia transforms the student hall at Keble College into an escape room during summer term break. The objective of the new programme is to raise awareness about the climate crisis by solving climate change-themed puzzles.
Isaac Nouri
Deconstruction, redesign and reconstruction of Castle Mill
Isaac’s project utilizes the space above the train tracks to create new ground for student accommodation whilst functioning as sound insulation. Criticised for its height and visual impact, the upper floors of Castle Mill student accommodation can now be disassembled and re-assembled on the newly created ground.
Lai Eric
Museum
Eric’s proposal transforms Oriel College building by converting it to a museum on colonial and imperial history, specifically focusing on Cecil Rhodes. Visitors journey through various spaces including dark exhibition rooms, sculptural pit, and a tunnel designed to provide immersive experience.
Lok Chi Chan
Co-Exist Transformation of Culture in Architecture
Rainbow’s proposal offers accommodation and a mosque for refugees from Yemen. Various elements from Islamic architecture such as water fountains and arches are incorporated with the existing fabric, adding architectural diversity of the building.
Marina Georgieva
A Court for Environmental Justice
Marina’s proposal is to engage the public in the decision-making process by providing fully transparent courtrooms where visitors can view the interaction inside. The design of the building is derived from different types of cracks caused by climate change.
Patryk Kubica
Deconsecrated Spirit
Patryk proposes a net-zero distillery in an existing café and bar, formerly St. Paul’s church on Walton Street, Oxford. The proposal retains the existing programme and adds a gin distillery allowing the public to witness the production process.
Pavlina Kolokotroni
A walk in the past
Pavlina proposed an open-air pub/beer garden, brewing and canal warehouse in the Worcester Car park. By re-surfacing the original basin and wharf, she extends the canal into the heart of the beer garden, allowing boats to access the site for recreational and delivery purposes.
Pui Yee Lim
Upcycling Studio
Pui Yee’s project transforms the brutalist office building into a creative hub designed for upcycling materials. The new Centre for Environmental Innovation is re-cladded with organic forms inspired by the contours of the Castle Mound in Oxford.
Roxiana Dumitru
Human Powered Odeon
Roxiana’s rethinks the production and screening of movies in the Odeon Cinema on George Street. Recognising the need for carbon-neutral energy sources, she integrates human energy harvesting systems to power the equipment whilst providing interactive experience for visitors.
Samantha Manton
The Retail Revolution
Sam’s proposal is a sustainable fashion house that uses process transparency to engage the public with the textile production using bio-materials. The mass and envelope of the existing building has been reconfigured to maximise exposure to sunlight whilst mimicking fabric.
Nur Selin Ucar
Zero-Waster Lab
Selin’s project is a laboratory for research and development of bioplastic. Located in St. Cathrine’s College, the structure of the new building is modelled based on tree roots which metaphorically grow and take over the building.
Stephen Ching Hin Chan
Unfold and Flourish the Florey Building
Stephen proposes a lightweight addition to the Florey building in Oxford to function both as a theater and a backdrop for the courtyard stage.
